About me

After a brief period working as a personal assistant at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park (then owned by Trusthouse Forte), I trained as a journalist with The Caterer. I spent more than 25 years writing about hospitality and was most recently editor of The Caterer magazine, where I worked for 27 years, latterly overseeing its digital edition, daily online content, the group’s other market products, such as the Acorn Awards, the Cateys and Hotelier of the Year, in addition to the market-leading, weekly title.

Amanda Afiya about me

Today, I run my own business offering editorial services and advising operators on PR, marketing and communications, and careers.

I am also a founder of Sauce Intelligence, a new hotel and restaurant consultancy created in partnership with industry influencers Giovanna Grossi, Jo Barnes and Nicky Hancock – which offers mystery guest audits and training solutions for hospitality businesses and specialises in mentoring and inspiring team members.

I am honoured to chair Hospitality Action’s national fundraising and marketing communications committee, am a passionate trustee of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts’ Adopt-A-School charity, and am privileged to work as a non-executive director alongside the team of hotel, restaurant and facilities management recruitment specialists Cartwheel Recruitment.

Amanda has been the most supportive, kind and ever-giving industry journalist. From day one of our personal journey, she has been 100% behind our projects. She wholeheartedly gets behind the industry, whether you are a student, an existing restaurateur or a hotelier, or a seasoned professional. Amanda has always reported in the right manner and is constantly looking at shining a positive light on all caterers. She is one of the warmest characters this industry could ever hope to have and she is a dear friend.

I have nothing but the hugest admiration for Amanda. As editor of industry magazine The Caterer, she portrayed a wonderful calm over her reign and showed herself to be the ultimate professional. She has an incredibly lovely nature and personality and she edited, steered and contributed to the magazine with authority, talent and great skill.
